President’s Message

Welcome to the 2nd issue of the OCRS Early Music Newsletter for October. First let me thank our own Russ Wilson for leading us in September with some beautiful music coupled with his usual charm and wit. This month we are fortunate to again have Rotem Gilbert leading us. Speaking of this, Mary Van Cott-Hand and Miranda Manners have been busy arranging our annual Recorder Workshop for 2017 and they are pleased to announce that both Rotem Gilbert and Clea Galhana will be leading the workshop this year on Saturday, February 25th- so mark your calendars now. Please see the announcement under “Workshops” in this month’s issue for their bios. More details and registration information will be available shortly.

If you did not attend, Los Angeles Recorder Orchestra (LARO) had a wonderful concert on September 18th and 25th. For those that do not know we have 8 OCRS members who play in LARO—Larry Dorn, Jim Forrest, Charlie Jackson, Miranda Manners, Debbie Patterson, Matt Ross, and Mary and Brad Van Cott-Hand, and their next concert is scheduled for February 19th and 26th.

This month Tesserae will have performances on October 22nd and 23rd featuring recorders and some of the greats from the Baroque: Handel, Corelli, Lully, and A. Scarlatti. On October 7th, Rotem Gilbert will be leading the Thornton Baroque Sinfonia at USC featuring Virtuosic Italian Seventeenth-Century Music by Claudio Monteverdi, Luzzasco Luzzaschi, Barbara Strozzi, Luca Marenzio and Dario Castello. See the concert listings for details.

It is that time of year again, and it was great to see so many pay up their dues at the September meeting. We had 25 members renew, and we gained 2 new members: please welcome Rita Giebel and Susan Gawthrop along with Richard Snell who joined over the summer. Susan Mason will be at the meeting waiting to take your checks and renewal applications, and please consider making a donation at a level that you are comfortable with to help support OCRS.
