Here we list upcoming concerts that include recorders or other early instruments, or are recommended by or include our members or conductors. Please send listings to the webmaster. Include “OCRS” in the subject line.

We are fortunate that there are many great concerts in Southern California all year. We cannot list them all. Below we present a list of area chamber and early music venues, with links.

…and if you just want to stay home and listen, check out KUSC (91.5 FM). They have a wonderful “Baroque Show” each Sunday morning; it airs 10 a.m. to noon. It features recorders every so often, and includes some of our favorite composers of that period.

Area chamber and early music venues

Boston and The San Francisco Bay Area are traditionally well known as centers for the performance and enjoyment of Early and Chamber Music, but Southern California has a wonderful selection of groups that is fast growing in popularity. The history of Fullerton Friends of Music is now over forty years long, and we are still going strong. The fledgling organization that was the pioneer of regularly scheduled concerts of chamber music in Orange County now soars to new heights with annual concerts that present leading musicians of national and international stature. Our mission is to foster in our growing community a greater appreciation and support of chamber music performances. As always, our music spans the centuries from the Baroque to the contemporary.

Los Angeles Recorder Orchestra

The Los Angeles Recorder Orchestra is one of a growing number of recorder orchestras that have sprung up in Europe and around the United States in recent years. LARO was founded in the summer of 2004, and is made up of thirty recorder players from all around Southern California. The group plays compositions ranging from the Renaissance period to the 20th century, arranged for sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, great bass, contrabass, sub great bass and subcontrabass recorders.

Incorporated on New Year’s Eve 1983 by founders Silke Sauppe and Wynne Stone, the Conservatory began its operations in space rented from a small church, with a faculty of eight, led by a volunteer administration. It has since grown to an established institution enrolling over 1300 students annually, taught by an exceptional and highly educated music faculty of over fifty. The San Diego Early Music Society is a non-profit organization founded to showcase the musical treasures of Europe’s medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, as performed on period instruments and in accordance with historical practice. The Society was established in 1981 and has presented concerts in churches, small halls, museums, and homes — settings for which the music was composed.
